Camp Helen State Park Offers Hiking, Fishing, Bird Watching and More
Camp Helen State Park is relatively new as a state park having been acquired by the state of Florida in 1994. Previously it was owned by the Avondale Textile Mills of Sylacauga, Alabama for more than 40 years. Most of that time they were used it as a retreat for vacationing employees. It is open daily from 8 am to sunset and the nominal entrance fee is paid at the entrance on the honors system. It is unique in that it is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico, Phillips Inlet and Lake Powell.
Coastal Dune Lakes are very rare, and Lake Powell is one of the largest in Florida. Coastal Dune Lakes are unique fishing spots since both fresh and salt water fish can be caught in them. Because it is a coastal dune lake rather than a bay, Phillips Inlet which connects it to the Gulf of Mexico is not maintained for boat navigation. While this park is on the water, it does not offer any boat ramps or launches.
Camp Helen is a great place to go if you love nature. Besides enjoying beaches, swimming, fishing and picnic facilities (some of which are handicap accessible), there are hiking trails, some of which are beautiful white sand!
Different plants throughout the park are labeled with their common and scientific names. The beach dunes are nesting habitats for both bird and turtles. Stop at the visitor center where you can get lists of local wildlife, plants and birds to watch for.
Besides the visitor center there is a large log lodge which was built in the 1930's and water tower in the park. There are also several smaller cabins and buildings which will hopefully be restored over time thanks to the efforts of the park service and the Friends of Camp Helen.
