Goofy Golf Celebrates 50 years in 2009
Goofy Golf on Front Beach Road is the oldest mini golf in the area. While this course lacks the lush landscaping the newer courses have, it is mostly level making it a very good choice for people with strollers and those who have difficulty with stairs. The challenges of mini golf include both aim and accounting for obstacles and contours on the greens. This course is unique among Panama City Beach putt putt golf courses because it has many moving obstacles adding the challenge of timing.
Lee Koplin built several similar mini golf courses in Mississippi and Florida as well as similar Magic Carpet Golf courses out west. This one was built in 1959 and is considered his biggest and best one. It has two eighteen hole, par 35 courses featuring huge cement figures. Don't let the low par fool you. The courses are fun and the timing makes them challenging.
The variety and bright colors make this course both easy to spot and attractive to children. Many of the figures such as the Sphinx, the volcano and the Easter Island head are so large that you walk right into or through them. Some other figures you'll find include a pirate ship, a castle, a windmill, a rocket ship, a church, a haunted house and assorted monsters. Additionally there are lots of animals including a monkey, a turtle, an octopus, a serpent, a chicken complete with a chicken coop, a snail, dinosaurs, a fish, an alligator, and an ostrich. There is even a cave on course 2.
