Mobile Internet Service
and Remote Computer Access

Mobile Internet Service

Wireless internet devicesMobile internet cards have improved dramatically. Our first one was good for receiving a few emails, but the speed was comparable to a dial up connection. The mobile internet card we currently use is from Sprint and the speed is comparable to high speed internet connections. It is nice, not only for hotels or airports if free internet service is not available, but we also use it in the car. (Passengers only, please.) We find this can be a great time to catch up on emails and make good use of what would otherwise likely be down time. It works anywhere a Sprint cell phone works and the cost is comparable to a cell phone line. We find that mobile internet service is a good investment both for traveling and as a back up when our home or office internet service goes down.

Computers

In addition to using a laptop computer, occasionally it is helpful to be able to access the computer at the office. LogMeIn is the solution we use. They have a free version which allows us to access and control the computer remotely. For a small monthly fee there are very useful additional features such as the ability to print something from the remote computer on a local printer. We also find that there are times when using LogMeIn enables us to work from home or saves a trip to the office. It needs to be set up before you go, but it only needs to be set up once. The one drawback is it can not be used if the remote computer is turned off. For us this is most likely to be the result of a power outage. If no one will be at the office while you're out of town, you may want to have someone nearby with a key.
