Enjoy a Day of Sailing in a Pontoon Boat, Kayak or Sailboat
Renting a pontoon boat can be a great family activity for a day or even more. St. Andrews Bay and the Grand Lagoon are the perfect place to spend a peaceful day sailing. Because they are more protected, you can enjoy sailing even when the waters in the Gulf of Mexico are rough.
A boat rental can be a wonderful new way to explore St Andrews State Park and Shell Island. Shell Island has miles of undeveloped beaches and is a great place for snorkeling. The Jetties offers completely different scenery, but just a beautiful. Since this area is home to one of the worlds highest concentrations of bottle-nosed dolphins, you may also get to see some. We have seen dolphins come right up to the boat. As you explore the bay, you will likely see people snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and even surfing in the area. Other watercraft you may see in the area will include charter fishing boats, the Shell Island Shuttle, kayaks, wave runners, glass bottom tour boats, the Lady Anderson Dining Yacht, the Sea Screamer and the Sea Dragon Pirate Ship. Beware of the Sea Dragon it is armed with squirt guns manned by kids on a pirate adventure! Take a picnic lunch and enjoy Shell Island. The island is narrow enough in many places so that you can easily walk to the gulf side. On your trip to Shell Island, keep in mind it is undeveloped, so there are no restrooms. Canoes and Kayaks can be rented at the Camp Store in St Andrews State Park. They also have snorkeling gear available for rent.
If you don't want to supply all the power, try a sailboat or pontoon boat. Pontoon boats accommodate as many as ten people and are fairly easy to navigate. This makes them a great family option.
There are several places in the area to rent assorted watercraft, but two of the larger ones are Aquatic Adventures and Adventures at Sea. Both have multiple locations for jet skis, parasailing and such, but the main locations for renting larger watercraft are: Aquatic Adventures - near the Boatyard, east of Captain Andersons Adventures at Sea - on North Lagoon Drive, west of Captain Andersons Most pontoon boat rentals include a tank of fuel which should be plenty for a day. If you choose to rent a vacation home with a boat dock, such as Lagoon House, you may want to consider a multi-day boat rental. Ask for available discounts. The rental will probably include only the first tank of fuel, but any discount should more make up for that. You will also enjoy the freedom and convenience of docking right at home and not having to make sure you return the boat by closing time each night.
