 Working vacations are a reality for many self employed people. For us, it has generally not been possible to get away without some work being done remotely. Many years ago, our best solution was to call into work, answer any questions, take care of phone messages, give any needed direction and hope for the best. If we were gone more than a week it was also sometimes necessary to create estimated paychecks in advance to be handed out while we were gone. Needless to say, technology has really changed things!
Whether or not you have employees who will “tend the shop” while you're gone will determine some of the choices you make. We have been in both situations at different times. There are just a few hardware items we carry with us on working vacations. With these items and some key services, we find we can do just about anything remotely except depositing checks in the bank and actually shipping inventory. In our age of faxes, email and cell phones, communicating from a remote location is not difficult. These are some of the solutions we use for both written and voice communications. Office Management Schedule management, accounting, receiving customer payments and bill payment are a few every day business functions that you may need to handle while you're away. Most of the office management solutions we use for these items are not specifically for remote operations, but have features that work well for remote applications.
